NRC (National Register of Citizens)  means the register containing names of Indian citizens.

National Register of Citizens in short NRC Assam is a unique arrangement that is used to identify illegal immigrants to Assam.

NRC first adopted in the year of  1951 after the census. After the Bangladesh liberation war of 1971, there has been a steady flow of illegal migrants to Assam, and In 1985, Assam Accord was signed between All Assam Students Union(AASU) and Government of India and some of its demands are as follows

  • Giving citizenship rights to foreigners who entered Assam between 1951 and 1961.
  • Granting all privileges of Citizens to foreigners who entered Assam between 1961 and 1971 without voting rights.
  • Deportation of foreigners who entered Assam during and after the war of 1971

There has been continuous demand from various segments of Assam to implement the above claims, and the Supreme Court has directed Govt of India to update the NRC Assam.

And NRC updation is basically the process of enlisting the names of citizens based on Electoral Rolls upto 1971 and 1951 NRC.
